What does a Group Leader do?
The EXCEL Group Leader is responsible to contribute to the overall operation of the EXCEL program at a school site. The Group Leader contributes to the development of engaging activities for students and receives daily instruction from the Program Team Leader regarding implementation and delivery of this recreation program. The Group Leader will lead students in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities from a variety of settings including classrooms, program areas, and outside play areas. The Group Leader is responsible for a group of assigned students while also working as part of a team, reporting directly to the site’s Program Team Leader, EXCEL Program.

They offer paid training, free participation for elementary-aged dependents in the EXCEL program while their parents work, paid snow days, paid sick and bereavement days, and access to the employee and family assistance program. Hours vary as they are dependent on bell times and needs of school communities. Staff can be employed for before and after school, or before school or after school only. For example, hours for the before school program may be 7:30am to 9am and after school could be 2pm to 6pm. There are also weekly staff meetings held on site for 1 to 1.5 hour for programming and planning.
Part-time employment is also available with staff being hired to work on an on-call, substitute basis. Substitute staff can work at a variety of schools in this role and are called or emailed directly by the program team leader, when required. Substitute staff can choose to decline the shift for the day if they are not available or already accepted a shift elsewhere.
